Local time on May 15, 2025, the Canadian Academy of Engineering announced the results of the 2025 fellow election. Simon X. Yang, Professor at the University of Guelph in Canada, was elected.

Prof. Yang received the B.Sc. degree in engineering physics from Beijing University, Beijing, China, in 1987, the first of two M.Sc. degrees in biophysics from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, in 1990, the second M.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Houston, USA in 1996, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Alberta, Canada in 1999.

Currently, Prof. Yang is the Director of the Advanced Robotics and Intelligent Systems Laboratory at the University of Guelph, and the Editor-in-Chief of the Sensors and AI journal. Prof. Yang is one of the internationally recognized pioneers in applying bio-inspired methods to robotics and control systems and has been ranked among the top 2% of highly cited scholars worldwide since 2022. He has published more than 650 academic papers in various academic journals, international conferences, and monographs.

In addition to his research, Yang has been actively involved in professional activities. As the Editor-in-Chief of Sensors and AI, he has played a crucial role in shaping the direction of research in the field. He has also served as an associate editor for several international journals and has been involved in organizing numerous international conferences. His influence extends even further as he has been a member of the grant review panel for agencies such as NSERC and CIHR.
