
Global Environmental Science (GES) is announcing a Call for Papers for the topic “ Emerging Advanced Oxidation Processes: From Mechanistic Insights to Practical Applications ”. To address contamination across diverse environmental compartments by highly persistent organic substrates, homogeneous advanced oxidation processes based on the non-selective reactivity of hydroxyl radicals have long been regarded as promising treatment strategies. Recent advances in materials science, electrochemistry, in situ spectroscopy, chromatography–mass spectrometry, and computational approaches such as density functional theory and artificial intelligence-assisted modeling have accelerated the development of emerging advanced oxidation processes. Such progress has enabled the exploration of new classes of activation catalysts and oxyanion-based radical precursors, more precise identification of primary oxidants and reaction mechanisms, and a systematic understanding of the impacts of operational parameters and water matrices. This Call for Papers project aims to highlight the latest academic innovations that address the technical limitations while reinforcing the advantages of advanced oxidation processes, thereby providing updated insights into their mechanisms, materials design, and practical implementation. Through these contributions, we hope to advance current knowledge in the field and stimulate further research and innovation in related disciplines. We welcome original research articles, reviews, commentaries and perspectives that address diverse aspects of emerging advanced oxidation processes, spanning fundamental science to practical implementation. Topics of Interest Include (but are not limited to) : Mechanistic analysis of homogeneous emerging advanced oxidation processes utilizing diverse oxyanions such as persulfate, periodate, and peracetate. Heterogeneous advanced oxidation processes employing new classes of photo-, electro-, and photothermal catalysts. Mechanistic insights into radical and non-radical reaction pathways, including the reactivity of oxyanion-derived oxidants toward organic pollutants and background natural constituents. Integration of advanced oxidation processes with non-oxidative physicochemical and biological treatment processes. Practical implementation of emerging advanced oxidation processes, including evaluation of treatment performance under realistic conditions, operational robustness, and environmental impacts. The rapid pace of industrialization and urbanization has led to the widespread presence of both emerging and legacy contaminants in the environment, posing a significant global challenge. A deep understanding of the fate of these pollutants in complex environmental matrices and the development of efficient, green control technologies is urgently needed. This Call for Papers project aims to compile the latest research advances focusing on the occurrence, transformation, and control mechanisms of environmental pollutants. It seeks to provide a platform for academic exchange to advance theoretical knowledge and technological applications in environmental science, ultimately contributing to the improvement of ecological quality. We welcome original research articles, reviews, commentaries and perspectives related to various aspects of Environmental Pollution and Control Mechanisms. Topics of Interest Include (but are not limited to): Occurrence,distribution, source apportionment, and risk assessment of emerging and legacy pollutants.
