Abstract

The study was conducted on Nazim Warar Canal in Al-Anbar Governorate, Iraq. It included water sampling at four sites, and the measurements were also taken of physical and chemical parameters such as air and water temperature, pH, alkalinity, conductivity, turbidity, total hardness, dissolved salts, dissolved oxyge n, biological oxygen de mand, sulfates, chlorides, phosphates, nitrite s and nitrates. The concentrations of heavy metals such as cadmium, lead, zinc and iron were also taken. The results showed variability in the studied values. Three hundred and eighty-six types of phytoplankton belonging to seven species were identified. The Bacillus algae division belonging to Panneles had absolute dominance in quantity and quality at all sites. The biological index of pollution and diversity was studied. The results showed that the Shannon index of diversity, Margalefs index and Evenness index were high in the first site. The highest average was recorded in the autumn compared to other sites. As for Palmers index of pollution, it recorded an increase in the second site compared to the other sites. The heavy metal pollution index showed the highest average in the summer and recorded the highest values in the second site. The water quality index showed the highest average in the summer and recorded the highest values in the first site.
