Biochar Technology in Wastewater Management

Introduction

Biochar has emerged as a versatile, sustainable, and cost-effective carbonaceous material with significant potential for wastewater treatment and resource recovery. Produced through the thermochemical conversion of biomass under oxygen-limited conditions, biochar possesses tunable surface chemistry, porous structures, high surface area, and diverse functional groups that facilitate the removal of organic pollutants, nutrients, heavy metals, emerging contaminants, and other toxic compounds from wastewater. Its properties can be further enhanced through physical, chemical, and biological modification.

This topic aims to highlight recent advances in the development, characterization, functionalization, and application of biochar-based technologies for wastewater management. Particular emphasis will be placed on innovative biochar materials, engineered and modified biochars, biochar-based composites, adsorption and catalytic processes, microbial–biochar interactions, and integrated treatment systems. Contributions addressing circular economy approaches, biomass-to-biochar conversion, pollutant recovery, regeneration and reuse of biochar, and the environmental sustainability of biochar technologies are particularly encouraged.
