Advanced Nanostructured Catalysts for Sustainable Chemical Synthesis

Submission deadline:
31 August 2027

Introduction:

Sustainable Catalysis (SC) is announcing a collection for the topic “Advanced Nanostructured Catalysts for Sustainable Chemical Synthesis”. The growing need for sustainable chemical production and the gradual shift from fossil-based resources have spurred the development of innovative catalytic technologies to convert renewable feedstocks into valuable fuels, chemicals, and materials. In this context, nanocatalysts have emerged due of their ability to enhance activity, selectivity, and efficiency through the controlled design of materials and active sites. Despite these advances, challenges related to catalyst stability, active-site identification, reaction selectivity, and practical scalability remain important areas of research.

This collection aims to highlight recent advances in the design, synthesis, characterization, and application of nanocatalysts for the sustainable production of fuels, chemicals and materials from renewable resources. The scope encompasses biomass valorization, lignocellulose conversion, and catalytic upgrading of biomass-derived intermediates. Particular emphasis is placed on the development of catalysts with controlled active-site structures, improved catalytic performance, enhanced stability, and high product selectivity. Mechanistic investigations, operando characterization, computational modelling, and machine-learning-assisted catalyst design are also relevant to advancing fundamental understanding and accelerating the discovery of next-generation catalytic materials. Contributions that advance the understanding and application of nanocatalysis, and support the development of selective, resource-efficient, and environmentally responsible routes to renewable chemicals and materials, are especially welcome.

Topics of Interest Include (but are not limited to):

  • Design, synthesis, and characterization of advanced nanocatalysts for renewable synthesis
  • Nanostructured metal, metal oxide, and bimetallic catalysts for sustainable chemical transformations
  • Biomass valorization and catalytic conversion of lignocellulosic biomass
  • Structure–activity relationships and mechanistic insights in nanocatalysis
  • Operando and in situ characterization of catalytic active sites and reaction intermediates
  • Computational modelling, density functional theory, and machine-learning-assisted catalyst design
  • Chemocatalytic, photocatalytic, and electrocatalytic routes for renewable chemical synthesis
  • Scale-up, process intensification, and techno-economic assessment of renewable catalytic technologies

Please refer to the Instructions for Authors for formatting and submission details. We warmly invite colleagues to submit manuscripts relevant to these themes to share their latest research findings and insights, and to contribute to the successful publication of this collection.
