Smart Functional Nanomaterials for Energy Harvesting and Self-Powered Sensing

Submission deadline:
20 May 2027

The rapid development of smart functional materials and nanoscale engineering is enabling a new generation of self-powered technologies that harvest ambient energy while sensing and responding to physical, chemical, biological, and optical stimuli. Advances in piezoelectric, triboelectric, pyroelectric, thermoelectric, photovoltaic, and hybrid energy-conversion technologies are creating new opportunities for self-powered and autonomous devices.

This themed collection will highlight recent advances in the design, synthesis, characterisation, modelling, and integration of functional nanomaterials and nanostructures for energy harvesting and self-powered sensing. Particular emphasis will be placed on the relationships between material structure, functional properties, energy-conversion mechanisms, and device-level performance, as well as the development of reliable, scalable, and application-oriented technologies.

The collection aims to bring together contributions spanning materials science, applied physics, electronics, nanotechnology, and engineering, with a focus on emerging self-powered sensors, wearable and implantable devices, intelligent interfaces, optoelectronic systems, and distributed sensing platforms.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Piezoelectric, triboelectric, pyroelectric, thermoelectric, and photovoltaic energy harvesting
  • Hybrid, multimodal, and multifunctional energy-harvesting systems
  • Functional thin films, nanowires, two-dimensional materials, and nanocomposites
  • Smart polymers, ceramics, semiconductors, and bio-derived functional materials
  • Charge generation, transport, energy-conversion mechanisms, and structure–property–performance relationships
  • Self-powered physical, chemical, biological, and optical sensors
  • Tribotronic, piezotronic, and piezo-phototronic devices
  • Wearable, flexible, implantable, and bio-integrated self-powered systems
  • Integrated energy harvesting, storage, power management, and signal processing
  • Energy-autonomous devices for healthcare, environmental monitoring, and the Internet of Things
  • Modelling, simulation, metrology, reliability, scalable fabrication, and technology translation

The collection welcomes original research articles, reviews, perspectives, and communications addressing both fundamental advances and emerging applications in nanoenergy and self-powered sensing technologies.
