Abstract

This paper examines the rise of China’s commercial space sector through mid-2026. It traces how commercial space rose in national policy, how capital flowing into the industry grew and changed in structure, and the operational record of the private launch companies and their megaconstellations. Over the past five years the Chinese commercial space sector has advanced at a pace few observers anticipated. This paper examines three developments in particular. The first is the rise of commercial space within Chinese national policy. The second is the growth and changing structure of capital flowing into the sector. The third is the operational record of the private companies themselves. This includes orbital launch milestones, reusable rocket development, and the building of national megaconstellations. The paper examines these three developments to further understand the interaction of the state and private space commercial sector.
