Since the first steps towards manufacturing system digitalization, the development of interfaces enabling interaction between humans and machines has progressed in parallel. With the appearance of novel technologies such as 3D-modeling or Artificial Intelligence, Human-Machine Interfaces are required to provide access to larger amounts and complexity of information, as well as more complex control capabilities. There are currently many different approaches to Human-machine Interaction, such as User Interfaces and Extended Reality. This research work summarizes the history of Human-Machine Interfaces, provides a timeline of their evolution based on the Industrial Revolutions, and showcases recent advancements and emerging technologies in the field. A review methodology considering the newest and most impactful works in the field is followed, and challenges and opportunities towards Industry 5.0 and the Industrial Metaverse are identified and discussed.
