Cover story: Moiré ferroelectricity provides a new platform for controlling interfacial polarization in two-dimensional van der Waals materials. This Review summarizes how advances in electrical, electrostatic, optical, electromechanical and operando characterizations have deepened the mechanistic understanding of moiré ferroelectricity, revealing the roles of local stacking, lattice reconstruction, charge redistribution, domain-wall dynamics and topological polar textures. It further discusses future opportunities for programmable low-dimensional ferroelectric systems.
