Single-inductor-multiple-output (SIMO) inverters offer a compact, proven and scalable solution for generating multiple AC or hybrid DC-AC outputs using a single magnetic component in the power stage. This approach enables lower cost, smaller form factor, reduced weight, and higher efficiency in low- to medium-power, space-constrained applications. This tutorial paper introduces the system architecture, circuit topologies and operating principles of baseline SIMO inverters. Advanced SIMO-derived architectures including SIMO AC-AC converters and bidirectional SIMO converters are also discussed. Key design considerations such as resonant tank design, main inductor selection and major power losses are addressed. In practice, SIMO inverters can act as multicoil wireless chargers in multicoil wireless power transfer (MC-WPT) systems.
