Cover Story: Stomata regulate plant carbon and water fluxes and respond to environmental conditions. Here we quantified how stomatal density and stomatal index vary with four key environmental drivers using a meta-analysis and generalized dose–response curves. Growth light intensity had a strong, consistent positive effect on both traits, while the effect of temperature was smaller. In contrast, ambient [CO₂] and water availability only showed weak and/or inconsistent effects. View the paper.
