Urban and Building Science (UBS) is pleased to announce the launch of the inaugural “Young Pioneer in Sustainable Built Environment” Award 2027. This international recognition programme celebrates outstanding early-career researchers who open new scientific directions, deliver original or breakthrough advances, and create credible, demonstrable value for a sustainable built environment.

Award and Recognition
Up to five recipients worldwide are selected annually by an independent award panel. Each recipient receives:
• Official Award Certificate: An official certificate conferring the “Young Pioneer in Sustainable Built Environment” title.
• Cash Prize: AUD 1,000 monetary award per recipient.
• Permanent Online Recognition: A dedicated recipient profile and formal selection citation published on the UBS website.
• Featured Academic Engagement: An invitation to present at an official UBS Young Pioneer Lecture, Forum, or Research Dialogue.
Eligibility Criteria
• Doctoral Degree: Applicants must hold a doctoral degree with substantive relevance to the broad field of sustainable built environments (including building physics, urban climate, sustainable architecture, civil and environmental engineering, energy systems, and built-environment decarbonisation).
• Career Stage (PhD within 5 Years): The PhD must have been officially awarded within five years of the application deadline (on or after 15 December 2021). The reference date is the official degree conferral date, not the thesis submission or defence date.
• Career Interruptions: Documented parental leave, long-term medical leave, compulsory military service, or other formally recognised career breaks extend the five-year eligibility window by the verified duration.
• Global Openness: There are no restrictions based on nationality, country of residence, institutional affiliation, or biological age. Prior publication in, citation of, or editorial service to UBS is not required.
• Professional Integrity: Applicants must be in good academic standing with no unresolved research-integrity sanctions.
Selection Philosophy and Evaluation Framework
The Award evaluates demonstrable pioneering contributions rather than publication productivity or journal prestige in isolation. Applications are evaluated by an independent committee against a 100-point rubric across five dimensions:

Application Package & Submission
Both self-applications and third-party nominations are accepted through the same channel (nominations confer no scoring advantage). All submission materials must be prepared in English and include:
1. Completed Application Form: Official application form providing candidate details, institutional affiliation, doctoral graduation verification, and eligibility declarations.
2. Curriculum Vitae (Max. 5 pages): Comprehensive CV detailing academic background, appointments, grants, honours, key outputs, and disciplinary service.
3. Pioneer Statement (Max. 2 pages): A narrative statement outlining the applicant's research vision and detailing Three Pioneering Contributions (supported by papers, datasets, methods, software, standards, or implemented projects), explaining originality, individual intellectual role, sustainability relevance, and evidenced impact.
4. Two Referee Contacts: Names, affiliations, and professional email addresses of two referees (at least one external to the candidate's current institution). Confidential reference letters will be requested directly by the UBS Editorial Office only for shortlisted candidates.
