This study explores the adaptation experiences of international students in Wenzhou, focusing on the challenges they face and their perceptions of the local academic, cultural, and social environments. Data were collected through surveys and interviews with 52 students from 20 countries, with the majority being from Morocco. The findings reveal that Wenzhou provides a supportive academic environment, particularly due to the integration of AI technologies and practical learning approaches. Most students reported that the education system in Wenzhou is more engaging than in their home countries, as it emphasizes applied learning over theoretical instruction. However, language barriers remain a significant challenge, affecting daily life, academic interactions, and social engagement with locals. Students expressed difficulty in making local friendships and navigating daily activities due to limited Mandarin proficiency. Cultural adaptation also posed challenges, with many students struggling to adjust to Chinese food and social norms. Despite these obstacles, students found strategies to improve their integration, including studying Mandarin through HSK courses, watching Chinese media, and engaging in conversations with locals. While most participants perceived the local community as welcoming, individual experiences varied. The study highlights the need for enhanced language support and cross-cultural exchange initiatives to improve international students’ adaptation.
